I started my Chinese medicine education in New York at the east coast campus of Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. There I met some excellent people and had the opportunity to work at Kamwo Herbal Pharmacy, a traditional Chinatown herb shop that had transformed itself into the largest herbal pharmacy on the east coast, shipping prescriptions all over the country and even to Europe.
After two years I moved to Los Angeles and transferred to Yo San University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. I was surprised to find that there was no equivalent to Kamwo on the west coast – a full service Chinese herbal pharmacy that carried both raw and granule herbs, with expert herbal advice and friendly to non-Chinese speakers. To fill the hole, I co-founded a full service professional Chinese herbal pharmacy while still in school.
In 2009 I graduated from Yo San and passed the California Acupuncture Licensing Exam. In addition to the practical training in herbs I got through my work, my formal education consisted of a rigorous 4-year (11-trimester) program covering thousands of hours of theoretical training in Chinese medicine theory, acupuncture techniques, herbal medicine, tui na, anatomy, biology, and chemistry. I gave over 350 treatments in the school clinic, and also treated patients at the following externship sites:
- Fortune Society in New York – an organization that helps ex-offenders reintegrate with society. Helps with jobs, housing, and health care. Stress is a huge health factor for this population. In addition to directly treating pain and illness, acupuncture is highly effective for stress and many associated health problems.
- Venice Family Clinic – part of the Los Angeles County health system. Our program treated primarily chronic pain.
- Being Alive – Located in West Hollywood. We treated HIV+ people for stress and mental health, pain, digestive issues, insomnia, side effects of medications and much more.
In 2012 I moved back to the Bay Area and opened Albany Acupuncture Health Center. After ten years away, coming home to the east bay is a welcome change.
