Dr. Lisa Nelson recently published “The Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease with Acupuncture” [1] in the journal Medical Acupuncture, a publication of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture. This article is an abridged version of her doctoral dissertation, which she completed while attending Yo San University.

In this article, Dr. Nelson proposes a cardioprotective mechanism for acupuncture, “…through regulation of calcium ions in the intracellular space, and upregulation of [nitric oxide] NO….The end result is acupuncture’s stimulation of neurotransmitters to modulate sympathoexcitatory reflexes.” She goes on to add, “At the same time, NO exerts its wide-ranging power to regulate coronary vessel tone, thrombogenicity, and inflammatory properties, as well as angiogenesis, through modulating neurochemicals, angiotensin, bradykinin, and vascular endothelial growth factor.”

Dr. Nelson is a 2014 graduate of the Yo San Doctoral Program in Integrative Medicine with a specialty in Healthy Aging and Longevity. She also graduated from the Yo San MATCM program in 2007. She still resides in Southern California, and is currently practicing at sea. Again, we congratulate Dr. Lisa Nelson on her excellent work in the field of oriental medicine and are proud to call her one of our own!
