DAOM Research Spotlight: 2014 Doctoral Distinction Award Winner John Blaska

On his path to becoming an Eagle Scout, John Blaska knew that his life would be one that focused not on being an “average guy,” but one that would be characterized by involvement in ground breaking projects. Simultaneously blended into his high achievement aspirations, John developed a respect for nature and the natural path, a motivation that he attributes to adherence to the writings of Eastern philosophers such Hua Ching Ni, the father of Yo San University Founders, Dr. Mao Shing and Dr. Daoshing Ni. What resulted from his formative influences has been nothing less than phenomenal.

While an undergraduate at the University of Minnesota John lobbied hard for the development of the “Lifestyle Leadership Degree” a program that focused on human development and the process of refining an individual’s life and lifestyle by balancing personal goals and intentions with external influences. In his undergraduate years John was also a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and has subsequently served as a member of the Fraternity’s Alumni Board, presenting at international conventions which had him speaking before an audience of over 1000 participants. His gentle yet decisive leadership style brought him to Hamline University where he served as head coach of the Junior Varsity Volleyball team. Other interests include being a baker, ballroom dancer, photographer, golfer, camper, certified life guard and water safety instructor, and supernumerary with the Minnesota Opera Company. John is also a fourteen year member of the world famous St. Paul Bouncing team, a volunteer group that performs aerial acrobatics in parades and at other special events. If all those interests and activities were not enough, currently John is learning to speak French and Chinese. Prior to preparing for a career in Oriental Medicine, John worked in the arena of entertainment concept design where he was involved in strategic product development and implementation. On the side he did consulting for a Detroit not-for-profit agency, “Jimmy’s Kids,” and facilitated projects that focused on self concept development of underprivileged children. While earning his master’s degree in Oriental Medicine in 2008, John was traveling extensively in India, Canada, Europe and the United States conducting field research and observing Ayurveda, Tibetan Medicine and other forms of Oriental Medicine that further stimulated his interests in healthcare and healthcare delivery policy. John quickly earned the respect of his Yo San University DAOM cohort colleagues. The breadth of his experience tempered by his philosophical perspectives, as well as his outstanding achievement while in the doctoral program earned him the 2014 Doctoral Distinction Award at the 2014 Yo San University Commencement. John’s Capstone Dissertation was titled, “A Revolution in Healthcare: How Traditional Chinese Medicine Can Help Redefine Primary Care as Personalized Integrative Care.” The research piece provided a systematic analysis and of the concepts of Primary Health Care, Integrated Health Care and Traditional Chinese Medicine. John’s thesis is that Traditional Chinese Medicine offers principles and protocols that can facilitate the movement of primary health care to be more holistic and personalized. Dr. John Blaska is now the President of Everspring Health in Minneapolis, Minnesota a cooperative organization founded trough his vision to provide personalized integrated care.
