The sun was brightly shining. and the spring air was fresh and crisp as the University celebrated the accomplishments of its thirty-four new degree recipients at the 2014 Yo San University Commencement exercises on Sunday March 23, 2014. It was a day of celebration on several levels, as master’s and doctoral degree candidates gathered with family, friends, faculty and staff at the beautiful Skirball Center Magnin Auditorium. The ceremony included addresses by a master’s program faculty member, Dr. Meredith Chunyi Qian , and a doctoral program faculty member Dr. Lawrence Lau. Student speakers included George Lamoureux from the doctoral program and Alanna Flanagan Boldt from the master’s program. Ms. Flanagan Boldt also lead the graduates in the recitation of the Healer’s Oath, a poignant script that encapsulates the commitment of Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners. The award for outstanding academic achievement in the master’s program was presented to Tobe Stacy. The Doctoral Program Distinction award was presented to John Blaska. Besides celebrating the accomplishments of its graduates, the ceremony also provided the opportunity for reflection and celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the University. The keynote speakers for the event were University founders, Dr. Mao Shing Ni and Dr. Daoshing Ni, who presented a multi-media address “Looking Back-Looking Forward.” The addresses engaged a series of over 150 photograph slides carefully chosen from the University archives to highlight some of the significant milestones in the University’s history, its current status and its future. As a part of his address and on behalf o the Board of Trustees, Dr. Mao presented a special award to President Larry Ryan who will retire in June of 2014. The award expressed recognition and appreciation for five years of productive service to the University. At the culmination of the ceremony the enthusiastic graduates marched proudly across the Skirball stage to receive their diplomas from Dr. Mao and Dr. Dao, accompanied by the applause and cheers of the audience. A reception followed in the spacious Haas Conference center on the Skirball grounds.
