During Adam's summers in college, he found working at plant nurseries more enjoyable than the idea of life as a researcher. Adam loved learning about how plants work, but knowing how to apply that knowledge to better our lives seemed much more interesting and relevant.

Alanna Flanagan grew up on an apple orchard, and went on to become a USC alumna and a Peace Corps beekeeper. She spent nearly a decade in non-profit community outreach, spearheading women’s health initiatives. This work included hosting panels with top physicians, celebrities and authors on a number of healthcare topics, including the benefits of complementary and alternative practices. Her passion for health and wellness led me to Yo San, to investigate and immerse myself in the medicine and lifestyle she’d been recommending to others.

Prior to attending Yo San, Monica Hilton worked for Duke Clinical Research Institute as a Clinical Research Associate. She traveled to participating hospitals across the country to ensure adherence to study protocol, ICH guidelines, Good Clinical Practices and FDA regulations.

Polli Glatleider's nursing and midwifery career included work as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Grenada, a labor nurse in tertiary and community hospitals, and a certified nurse-midwife practicing locally and internationally. While maintaining a midwifery practice in Los Angeles, she conducted trainings and consultations in Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Crimea, Albania and Indonesia for the World Health Organization, the American College of Nurse-Midwives, and various non-governmental organizations.

Before Yo San, Natalie Jiaravanont worked internationally, in the auction world and then advertising and marketing. She also took an active role in community service, establishing English as a Second Language Programs and tutoring immigrant women in low-income neighborhoods. Business was great, but she found herself wanting a career helping individuals in a more personal and meaningful way. TCM seemed like a natural choice since it’s been a life long interest and acupuncture was the only treatment to alleviate her pain from a back injury.

“When we founded Yo San University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, we made a pledge to pass on the teachings of our father, grandfather and ancient teachers of Chinese Medicine to future generations – to provide you with a place of learning based on the guiding principles of Taoism, where you may explore your own spiritual growth as an integral part of learning the healing arts.”

The Taoist principles of harmony and balance are held to be the foundation of our physical, mental, emotional, and psychological well-being. By living balanced lives in accord with nature, we become living examples of our healing craft. This is not an easy task; perhaps it is the greatest challenge our students face.

After graduating from Yo San, Alexa Hulsey spent three years as a YSU faculty member, clinical practitioner, and also served as the University's Assistant Academic Dean. She relocated to Tennessee and in 2010 opened East Nashville Community Acupuncture, which provides affordable acupuncture in a peaceful community setting. Her clinic now employs several full-time acupuncturists and provides around 1,000 low-cost acupuncture treatments every month. Alexa also currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Community Acupuncture Network.

Nini Mai, L.Ac. (Class of 2009) and Jonah Ewell, L.Ac. (Class of 2009) together established a successful TCM herbal dispensary company, Fat Turtle Herbs, based in Culver City, California. “In the course of our studies at Yo San, we came to realize the need for a full service TCM herbal pharmacy that not only offers custom fulfillment of herbal formulas, but also provides educational support to both the acupuncture profession and the public in general.” said Nini. “We were inspired by the awesome herb instructors we had at Yo San, and the supportive environment at school really made a difference; we felt encouraged and were optimistic we would make it,” added Jonah.
