“It’s all in odor, color, sound and emotion” were the words of Professor Neil Gumenick, who addressed a group of Over forty Yo San University students and faculty members gathered in the Qi studio on Thursday June 6, 2013. Gumenick, who is one of the world’s foremost practitioners and teachers of Five Element Theory, captivated the audience with his direct and clear conceptualization of the nuances of the unique system of body/mind/spirit medicine that has been a part of his own life style for over 33 years. Using concrete images and examples Gumenick explored the principles of energetic imbalance and “causative factors” that are foundational to Five Element theory. In the one hour session Gumenick explained how to conseder the five elements of fire, earth, metal, water and wood and how those element can potentially impact personality, interactions, attitudes and perceptions. While Gumenick urges practtioners to be aware of the odor, color, sound and emotional indicators of the emergence of the elements, he cautions that trying too hard to discern and diagnose is likely to be unproductive. “It’s all there right in front of you in every patient with whom you interact” asserted Gumenick. The author of over 40 article on Five Element Theory, Gumenick is the founder and Director of the Institute of Classical Five-Element Acupuncture, was earned his credentials in the throy through a ten year master apprectice program in England with J. R. Worsley.
