Yo San University is fortunate to hold legendary singer Freda Payne as a friend and supporter. Payne’s spirited performance at the May 18, 2013 Robert Graham Visionary Award Event honoring choreographer/director Debbie Allen set a new entertainment standard for the annual University gala. Freda Payne has shown herself to be a woman of endless positive Qi. Surely, Freda Payne’s dedication to Traditional Chinese Medicine is a factor that contributes to her tradition of enormously entertaining and simultaneously deeply moving performances. That tradition was upheld most recently on July 19 and 20, 2013 when Freda delivered cabaret concert performances at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood. The sold-out club concerts provided the opportunity for Freda to share with her audiences some of the numbers that will be a part of a new jazz album that will be released early 2014. The devoted and ever so appreciative audience of fans and friends included what amounts to a “Who’s Who” list of Hollywood celebrities and recording industry leaders. Freda Payne’s history includes having worked next to the some of the greatest voices in the industry. And the recording star is not shy about emulating and incorporating both jazz and R and B techniques of others into her own unique voice and style. Besides sharing her new jazz editions, the two hour Catalina Club performance included tributes to Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne and Lou Rawls. Freda capped her cabaret appearances with flashback homage to her early career days as a singer in the Motown tradition performances of her multi-million selling record “Band of Gold” and “Bring them Back Alive.” Like her performance at the Yo San University Gala, the Catalina Club appearances earned the legendary Freda Payne well deserved standing ovations.
