Office of the President


Lawrence J. Ryan, Ph.D.
President

Larry Ryan is a licensed California psychologist with an extensive background in Higher Education. He earned his Bachelor’s degree at John Carroll University, his Masters degree at East Carolina University, and his Ph.D. degree at The University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada. Larry has had post doctoral training in bio-behavioral medicine and has also authored and co-authored a number of articles published in professional journals. He served as the Chair of the Psychology Concentration and Core Faculty Member in the Ph. D. Program at Union Institute & University, as Vice President of Academic Affairs at American InterContinental University, Los Angeles, Graduate Dean at Mount St. Mary’s College, Los Angeles and Vice President and Academic Dean at St. John’s College in Camarillo, California. Larry also served for six years in the position of Graduate Dean at Union Institute and University, fourteen years as a faculty member and Psychology Department Chair at Mount St. Mary’s College Los Angeles and another six years as Professor and Behavioral Sciences Department Chair at Lyndon State College in Vermont.

Financial Affairs


Sum Yee Wang, MA. 
Chief Financial Officer

Ms. Wang is a founding member of the Board of Trustees of Yo San University and has served as the University's Chief Financial Officer since the inception of the University in 1989. Ms. Wang brings to the Board her strong business sense and strategic planning experience. Ms. Wang established and maintains the accounting, financial aid, cash flow management, payroll and budgeting systems at the University. She also served as Chief Financial Officer for the Tao of Wellness for ten years, overseeing the financial operation of the company as well as personnel, audits and compliance with government and professional agencies. Ms. Wang graduated with honors from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles in 1984 earning a B.S. in Business Administration. She received her M.A. in Psychology from Antioch University, Los Angeles, in 2004.

 
 

Mariani Shuilan May 
Controller / Bursar

With over 23 years of service to Yo San University, Shuilan knows everyone—students , faculty and staff. She also is a walking depository of the history and critical facts and figures regarding the University. Her skillful service as the university bursar/controller assures that all financial transactions are handled with accuracy, care and above all—kindness.


Jyotika Karan 
Assistant to the controller

A third generation East Indian who has never been to India, Jyotika grew up in Fiji. Her more than ten years of service to Yo San University began in the role of a clinic front desk receptionist. Jyotika currently serves as the Assistant to the University Controller and manages the university’s payroll as well as many of the University’s accounts receivable and accounts payable functions.



Edward Mervine, MA. 
Financial Aid Coordinator and Pro Temp Coordinator of Student Services

Ed completed a MA in American History at Akron University and had twenty plus years experience delivering exceptional student service in large and small colleges and universities prior to joining Yo San University in 2002.

Master's Program


Lawrence Lau, MD (Singapore), MSOM, L.Ac.
MATCM Dean of Academic and Clinical Affairs

Dr. Lau graduated from medical school in Singapore where he was in private practice for several years before moving to Hong Kong for advanced training. His interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine brought him to California where he obtained a Masters degree in Oriental Medicine and California acupuncture licensure. Lawrence joined Yo San University in 2001 and currently holds the appointment of Dean of Academic and Clinical Affairs. In addition to teaching courses in Western and integrative clinical medicine, Lawrence also maintains a private practice at Yo San University. Lawrence was instrumental in setting up the Premiere Oncology Foundation/Yo San University Integrative Clinic program in 2007 and was principal acupuncturist for the collaboration from its inception to 2009. Lawrence was also part of the team that successfully launched the Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA)/Yo San University Pediatric Acupuncture program that formally introduced acupuncture as a validated treatment modality at CHLA. Lawrence is also actively involved in the acupuncture profession and is an accreditation site visitor with the Accreditation Commission (ACAOM) since 2001, and regularly chairs ACAOM site visits to acupuncture schools across the country.



Alison Doherty, L.Ac.
MATCM Assistant Academic Dean

Alison earned her Master’s degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine at Yo San university in 2012.  She is currently the Assistant Academic Dean and a Technical Supervisor in the YSU clinic, as well as an acupuncturist at Costa Acupuncture.  Throughout her training at Yo San, she was accepted into an externship program at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, where she gained privileges to treat pediatric patients with various chronic pain conditions, as well as an array of complex autoimmune diseases. She also has a private practice in Santa Monica with a focus on women’s health, pediatrics, and pain management.  Her previous background of 12 years in pre-school teaching, childcare and child development brought for the desire to use her skills as a Practitioner of Chinese Medicine to help families in the restoration of their quality of life both, throughout and after illness.

Joslyn Williams
Director of Enrollment

In her role as Director of Enrollment, Joslyn is most likely he first person that master’s students connect with as they make inquiries to learn more about Yo San University. Joslyn grew up in the same Venice neighborhood where Yo San is Located. After graduating from Loyola Marymount University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and Fine Arts, Joslyn brings to Yo San a broad range of public relations, communications and marketing experiences. Joslyn’s life is full. Besides her busy days at YSU, she is in the process of earning a master’s degree in Architecture and Interior Design at UCLA.

Albert Vaca, L.Ac.
Dean of Clinical Education

Albert Vaca graduated from Yo San in 2006. After completing the Lerner Acupuncture Orthopedics course, he went to work treating patients in various pain clinics in the Los Angeles area. In the Summer of 2009, Albert joined the Yo San clinic as a Post Graduate Fellow. He quickly moved to an Assistant Supervisor position, and then on to his current position as Clinic Manager. Albert also has an acupuncture practice in Westwood, focusing on pain management and adrenal fatigue issues.
 

K. Natalia Foster, L.Ac.
Clinic Manager

Natalia began her training in Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2001, at Yo San University in Los Angeles, CA. She left to pursue a degree in art, then in 2005, decided to complete her training in Traditional Chinese Medicine at Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine College in Berkeley, CA. While still in school, she began working in the office of Dr. Nancy Rakela, a licensed acupuncturist who has been in practice for over twenty five years. The three years she spent working with Dr. Rakela deepened Natalia’s practical knowledge in both the art of acupuncture and the business side of practice management.
Natalia was influenced by the time she spent in Thailand studying Thai massage and vipassana meditation. The mental discipline that she learned contributes to the focus that she has while treating her patients. In addition to being the Clinic Manager at Yo San University, she maintains a practice in Long Beach, CA.


Mechelle Greenspan, L.Ac. 
Herbal Dispensary Manager

With her master’s degree from Yo San University and with her California Acupuncturists Licensed in hand, Michelle is a valued asset in her role of the Clinic Herbal Dispensary Manager. Michelle enjoys facilitating the development of our students’ knowledge of herbs and their facility and agility in compounding accurate herbal formulas.




Rebecca Navarro
Clinic Receptionist

A Bakersfield, CA native, Rebecca honed her skills as a front desk receptionist in a number of positions that included day spas and other service organizations. Rebecca’s welcoming behaviors make every clinic patient feel special and optimistic for renewed wellness on every clinic visit. Her fluency in Spanish is an added skill that she uses every day at the Yo San University Community Clinic.

Registrar

Tora Worapan Flint earned her Bachelor Degree in Mass Communications from Chiang Mai University in Thailand and Master’s degree in Global Marketing Communication from Emerson College in Boston. 

Marguerite Dunn
Administrative Assistant

Marguerite joins the Yo San team as an Administrative Assistant – she is a native of Ireland and also lived in the U.K. before coming to live in the U.S. Her background is in publishing/advertising sales and she has worked for major publishing companies such Rodale Press and Hearst publications.

Andrea Murchison , DAOM, L.Ac.
Director of Doctoral Program

Andrea Murchison, originally from Halifax Nova Scotia, represents the 6th generation of healthcare professionals in her family. She studied Child Psychology in Toronto, Ontario and counseled emotionally challenged children and their families. While working with children with ADHD, Andrea began to search for alternative ways to assist these children, including dietary changes and Chiropractic medicine. After moving to California, Andrea developed a stronger passion for complementary medicine and an interest in TCM. She is a graduate of Yo San University in MATCM and DAOM programs.



Shelley Cerny, MATCM. 
Doctoral Program Assistant

Shelley quickly fell in love with Chinese Medicine 11 years ago while volunteering at a community acupuncture clinic in San Francisco. This led her here, to Yo San and earning her Master's in TCM and most recently completing an externship in Beijing, China. Her interest in health and the body have also been explored through dance, yoga, singing, meditation, and qi gong. Shelley is excited to be a part of the Yo San team and is looking forward to growing a private practice.

Library Manager

With a Bachelor’s Degree in History and a Masters Degree in Library and Information Services from San Jose State University, Anne is ready and most able to assist YSU students and faculty in their searches for TCM and other print and on-line resources. Ann’s past experience included work at the South Pasadena Public Library, and at the Los Feliz Arts Charter School.
