Yo San University was founded by brothers Dr. Daoshing Ni and Dr. Mao Shing Ni, who named the University after their grandfather, Master Yo-San Ni, a healer and teacher in the Taoist tradition. The Ni family enjoys a rare, unbroken lineage of 38 generations of Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners. YSU was established to carry on this lineage; to promote standards of educational excellence in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine; and to establish a program in this country that fosters the medicine’s Taoist roots. The Ni brothers’ father, Master Hua-Ching Ni, a well-known practitioner and educator in Los Angeles, served as University Chancellor in the early years. Our first first class of eight students began their studies in January 1989.
From those modest beginnings, the University now has some 200 students in our Master’s and Doctoral degree programs. They come from around the globe and bring a richness of experience and perspective to every class. The Yo San University Community Clinic not only serves as a training center for our students, but also provides residents of the West L.A. area with affordable acupuncture and TCM.
Yo San University, a nonprofit organization, educates students to become exceptional practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Taoist healing arts. The school facilitates the development of students’ spiritual and professional growth, and provides the community with an integrative medical care model and services.

Welcome from Our President
When I joined YSU, it was with great respect and admiration for the University’s legacy and commitment to excellence. In my time here, I have met countless people who share their stories and hopes for themselves, our field, and for the University.
Each day I become more convinced of what a very special place Yo San University is. It brings together people with a deep concern for one another and for the health of our communities.
Yes, we provide highly-valued career training, but Yo San University is more than that. It represents the summative effort, experience, and dedication of the past, coupled with an excitement for the future. It represents our dedication to inspiring our students and graduates—the 39th Generation. And to inspiring the next generation of healthcare in which holistic, person-centered care seamlessly blends the best of both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western medicine practices.
I am excited by the growing opportunities, yet aware of this critical stage in the evolution of Traditional Chinese Medicine in America. I believe our educational programs in the classroom and clinical settings distinguish us among students seeking to claim their role in integrative healthcare. Our areas of concentration provide focus, and our Integrative Learning Experiences apply and deepen knowledge and confidence.
I am committed to listening to thoughtful advice on how we can make YSU the best it can be for our students and patients, but also as a place to work and grow a career. The stories I have heard and actions observed support the notions of who we are, and who we strive to be. I look forward to hearing more from you, and remain proud to serve our community.
Lois Green, M.H.S.A.
